What’s up, Doc?

by Jenn (j3nn.net) on July 31, 2008

So, I went to my new doctor’s appointment today and my first impression of him was, “Wow, this is very casual” — he called his patients from the waiting room on his own instead of a nurse. That’s cool. When it was my turn he told me to “Come on in, young lady” — I haven’t been called “young lady” in awhile. In fact, I have all but resigned to the fact that I am an old hag to most people my age or younger being most people call me “ma’am”, which I absolutely hate. :| I cannot stand when people my age or a few years younger “ma’am” me to death in stores and restaurants. Just call me, “Hey, you!” or something! LOL Geez, I’m still in my 20’s, is it really necessary for someone about 3 years younger than me to act like Moses signed my yearbook? *sigh*

I digress.

He didn’t weigh me, yay! That’s my least favorite part of going to the doctor. He took my blood pressure right away though, it was very high; 160/100  that’s not unusual for me though, I’ve had high blood pressure since I was an infant and nobody has figured out why. The best explanation I get is usually, “because you’re overweight.”

Within a few minutes he brought up 2 things I have suspected; he wanted to know if I have been tested for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and no, I haven’t, but an endocronologist did tell me that I am insulin resistant several years ago. I have suspected I have PCOS for awhile now based on having almost every symptom of it, especially the darkening skin patches, high BP, and red cheeks.

He said that I can’t stay on diuretics forever and we need to figure out why I’m swelling up like I am (I was down another 3 lbs on the scale this morning, by the way). That’s when he brought up my pituitary gland, which I have also suspected as being the root of all of my fluid retention evil from what I have read. Benign tumors on your pituitary gland are actually very common. I’ve read that based on autopsies, 1 in 5 people have one and most don’t even know. So, he wants me to get an MRI of my pituitary, but wants to review my records first to see what I’ve been tested for already to avoid testing for the same things over and over.

He gave me a prescription for another diuretic that he said works in a different part of the kidneys. He didn’t blame all of my symptoms on being overweight and he also didn’t insinuate that it’s “all in my head.” He could clearly see that I have unusual swelling and other symptoms that isn’t normal, especially for someone my age. He made a comment about being “curious as to what’s going on”, my symptoms are bizarre, especially because every test thus far has come back normal. I’d love for every symptom I have to be strictly weight-related, but after losing almost 100 lbs (give or take fluctuations ;) ) and not improving, I definitely know that there’s more going on than most doctors have insisted for years. I have been this weight before and there’s many, many other people my same exact weight and heavier, but I did not then and others do not experience the symptoms I currently have, especially at my age.

I’m not too worried. Tests coming back “normal” worries me more than anything. I’d really like to put a name on something that I know is going on. So, we’ll see what happens. :)

I didn’t realize how many of you miss my menu table that I usually attach below. The reason I haven’t included it in the past week or so is because I haven’t been planning my menu ahead of time like I usually do. I’ve been jotting things down on Windows Notepad as I go along, so I haven’t made a colorful menu lately. I’m not abandoning the format, so I will start including it in my updates on Monday. I’ve been a little busy and/or preoccupied with other things, so I’ve been lax with my menus and planning. That will all be back to normal soon though. :D

After the doctor we stopped by Shop Rite. I wanted to get a box of Amnon’s reduced fat whole wheat pizza. They didn’t have the whole wheat variety, but they had 55% reduced fat white, so I got a box of it. I’m not against white flour, I just don’t eat it as much as I used to. Nothing wrong with it in moderation, just ask millions of healthy senior citizens that have included it in their diets for decades. ;)

1 slice Amnon’s 55% reduced fat pizza (300 cal) topped with 50g no salt added canned mushrooms (15 cal), 14g red onions (8 cal) and 3 Lindsay low sodium black olives (15 cal). This pizza is awesome! You just make the oven really hot, then put it right on the racks to warm up for a few minutes. It comes out just like freshly made pizzeria-style pizza. It was a yummy, quick lunch for just 338 calories. I usually eat 2 slices like this, but I wanted ice cream afterwards instead. :P It was a “semi-cheat” day. Going to the doctor is always reason to take an easy day! ;)

I went on a walk before going to my appointment because I didn’t want to get sweaty after I took a shower. I had to go by myself because my husband had some work to finish up before we left the house. :( Boo! I didn’t wear my heart rate monitor strap, but I did wear the watch part so I could see the time lol. Pink plastic is very fashionable!

My BodyBugg results for 7/31/08:

End of day: 2851 calories burned

I’ve been on an eggplant kick lately, not sure why. An eggplant parmesan sandwich sounded really good, so I picked up a loaf of crusty whole wheat bread while we were at the store:

Sooo yummy! I peeled and sliced 164g Italian eggplant (40 cal) longways, then fried it in a nonstick frying pan with 2 teaspoons of olive oil (80 cal) that I used my pastry brush to coat the pan with. I preheated the oven to 450F, then I let the eggplant sit on a plate after it was done so I could make a quick batch of fresh tomato sauce in the same pan with 122g diced vine ripened tomato (22 cal), 30g diced red onions (15 cal), dried oregano, garlic powder and 2 teaspoons olive oil (80 cal).

I cut the very dense loaf of whole wheat bread in half and it came out to like 4000g on the food scale lol. So, I did what my father used to do with Italian bread; I gutted out the doughy middle so that it made a nice, hollow shell. The crust is my favorite part anyway, so it came out to 112g (260 cal) after I did that. Still a lot of calories for a piece of bread, but worth it once in awhile! :D

While the eggplant was cooking, I was simultaneously cooking 196g fresh zucchini (31 cal) that I sliced into very thin, long strip and sautéed in a nonstick frying pan with 2 teaspoons olive oil (80 cal) and 1 garlic clove (5 cal).

Then I built the eggplant sandwich; a layer of the eggplant, sauce, 1oz fresh mozzarella (80 cal), repeat. Then I popped it into the preheated 450F oven for about 3-4 minutes with a piece of foil over it. This was a DELICIOUS dinner sandwich with very fresh ingredients for just 768 calories. The sautéed zucchini was wonderful! In hindsight, 1 teaspoon olive oil would have been plenty, but it still came out great. If I didn’t already have a lot of cheese on my sandwich, I would have added a little pecorino romano on top. I’ll try that soon though. YUM!

We have a lot of things going on this weekend; my cousin is visiting, work, and etc., etc. Plus I want to enjoy the nice weather while it lasts. Blustery winter days will be here soon enough. I guess you can say the summer has been very diet-casual for me. Nothing wrong with that! Last summer I was still eating Lean Cuisine and not exercising at all. I’ve come a long way! But like I’ve said, this is a journey, NOT a destination, so life is always going to have changes in course and room for improvement. I’m happy, I feel great despite being puffy and I’m looking forward to enjoying the rest of my newfound lifestyle. :D

Now, I just need a bigger kitchen, I’m outgrowing mine already. :( Maybe I should stop shopping so much… naaaaaaa!! Let’s not be silly! *giggles*

Kitty magnets

by Jenn (j3nn.net) on July 30, 2008

My husband and I took a walk before dinner and instead of our usual route to town, we went the other direction because we got a little ways down the road when I spotted “something” on the road that I didn’t want to see. :( So, we turned around and tried out the other direction.

We got about 15-20 minutes down the road when we heard the cries of an animal in the woods. At first we thought it was a wild goose or a duck, but then it got louder and sounded more like a “meow”. And it was; it was a skinny little tiger striped kitten (about 4 or 5 months old) with white paws! :o Awww! He was very skinny and meowing uncontrollably. I think he was lost, so we headed back towards home because every step we took, the kitten was right there with us following us. He was making me so nervous because he was very hyper and kept going on the road when a car was coming. When we called him by us he would come running towards us, but he kept stopping and then catching up, as if he was looking for something. He looked very hungry, you could see his bones in his back legs. :( I felt so bad! So, we wanted to take him home to feed him but the walk home was long and there’s no way he would let us carry him being he was so hyper. Then halfway back home he went off into the woods and didn’t come back. It was 8:15PM and getting dark out, so we couldn’t stay to see where he went. It makes me so sad. We already have 10 cats, but what’s one more? :) We’re going to take a walk that way tomorrow and see if he finds us again. I really hope he has a home, but I doubt it being he looked so malnourished. Ugh, we need to buy a farm so I can start an animal sanctuary. *sigh* I hope everyone will spay and neuter their pets, there’s way too many homeless animals out there and my husband said I can only take in like 300 or 400 of them and I might meet that limit by the end of the year LOL. :)

My BodyBugg results for 7/30/08:

Went to sleep at 6:00AM
BodyBugg reset at 12:00AM
Woke up at 11:30AM
Took nap at 1:00PM
Woke up at 3:30PM

End of day: 2607 calories burned

Even though going the other direction on the road was less of an incline, it made my legs hurt. It’s crazy how a little change in route can make such a difference. We finally tried Wii Fit tonight too. OMG, it’s fun! But it told me I’m obese LOL — no surprise there! It said my husband is overweight too! :o So, we both set a small goal to be 2 lbs less in the next 2 weeks. lol I wouldn’t want to be too ambitious only to fail and have Wii lecture me or something hahahaha. We tried “Wii Ski” and the aerobics that came with Wii Fit; they’re pretty hard! We only played for a little while, but I can definitely see it being a pretty good moderate cardio workout if you really get into it. I wouldn’t necessarily count it as my main cardio for the day, but it’s going to be an awesome “fun-ercise” thing to incorporate into our lives that were very sedentary last year at this time. We’re getting so active now, I love it! My husband said it made him feel energized, so he wants to play it in the morning when we wake up. Sounds good to me!

I did all big meals today. I spent over 500 calories on breakfast, but it was worth it. I LOVE a nice, big crunchy bowl of cereal and I’ve been craving raisin brain lately, so I improvised with what I had and came up with this:

2 cups (104g) Kashi GoLean (280 cal) that I put in a bowl with 20g Sun-maid seedless raisins (60 cal), then sprinkled on ½ teaspoon cinnamon (2 cal) and ¼ teaspoon stevia powder and mixed it all together so that the cereal and raisins got coated with the cinnamon and stevia. Then I added in 1 medium banana (110 cal) and 1 cup skim milk (90 cal) for 542 very-hearty-breakfast-calories. Not only was it very filling, but a very pleasurable way to get 35g of protein!

Lunch only took about 5 minutes to throw together, but it was very yummy:

I toasted 2 Toufayan whole wheat Pitettes (140 cal) in the toaster on the lowest setting. Then I rubbed a garlic clove over them while I preheated the oven to 450F. Then I topped the pitas with 122g vine ripened tomato slices (22 cal) and 2oz fresh mozzarella (160 cal) and popped them in the oven until the cheese was melted. With 14g Snyder’s unsalted mini pretzels (55 cal), this was a delicious set of mini pita pizzas for just 377 calories.

You’re not seeing double, I really did eat 2 turkey burgers for dinner:

I was so hungry after our walk and 2 turkey burgers was just what I needed to fill up my rumbling tummy. We preheated the grill, then I cooked two 3oz turkey burgers (180 cal) with 1 slice Sargento reduced fat Colby Jack cheese (60 cal) on it. Earlier in the day I boiled 170g red potato (125 cal), so while the turkey burgers were cooking, I steamed 1 cup (96g) Birds Eye mixed stir fry veggies (40 cal) and 3oz fresh broccoli (30 cal), then added them to a nonstick frying pan with the potato that I cut into chunks, 30g diced red onions (15 cal), 2 teaspoons olive oil (80 cal), 4g butter (33 cal), Mrs. Dash tomato/basil, and Mrs. Dash lemon pepper.

When the turkey burgers were done, I put them on 2 Martin’s 100% whole wheat potato rolls (160 cal) with 1 TBSP Hellmann’s olive oil mayo (50 cal), 1 TBSP Heinz no salt added ketchup (20 cal), 1 cup Bibb lettuce (5 cal) and vine ripened tomato slices (20 cal). Along with the potato/veggies, this was a VERY satisfying meal for 818 yay-for-big-meals-calories. :D The potatoes and veggies sauteed in the olive oil and butter with Mrs. Dash was FANTASTIC! I think the combination easily fits in my top 10 favorite side dishes. Yummy!!

So, tomorrow is my doctor’s appointment. :? We have to be up early even though my appointment isn’t until the afternoon. We have to stop by the DMV again before the doc. Hopefully that doesn’t make my blood pressure too high lol! I was down 3 lbs on the scale today, just like I predicted would happen right before going to my new doc  LOL. I’m still REALLY puffy, so I’ll be able to show him what I’m talking about. He’ll probably want the records from my last doctor too, so I can really prove how much of a hypochondriac I am with umpteen tests that all come back normal, yet still have bizarre chronic symptoms. hehe We’ll see how it goes. I hope he’s not one of those docs that just tells me I’m fat and that’s all that’s wrong with me. I know I’m fat, I’m not helping them pay back their student loans to hear that. :| I have symptoms of things that are not because I’m overweight, but only the best doctors I have come into contact are willing to acknowledge that. I no longer waste my time on doctors that think everything — including global warming — is because I’m fat. lol ;)

Mazel tov!

by Jenn (j3nn.net) on July 29, 2008

Every time we go to Shop Rite, I love visiting the aisle called “Kosher World.” It has so many unusual products, most of which are made with wholesome ingredients. We went last night and I found these soups in the freezer:

I love finding low sodium products! Especially ones with pronounceable, identifiable ingredients.

Barley & Mushroom: 80 calories, 40mg sodium, 3g protein
Vegetable: 90 calories, 45mg sodium, 4g protein
Split pea: 140 calories, 50mg sodium, 13g protein
Balsamic tomato & (brown) rice: 110 calories, 260mg sodium* (not very low in sodium, but reasonable)

A lot of people must have autumn/winter on their minds because I was just thinking about what kind of soup I can make in my new mini crock pot. Then I came across these and thought, “Hmm, maybe I don’t have to make any at all lol!”

I also picked up another box of Matzo crackers in “Kosher World”:

The only ingredients are: whole wheat flour and water. 0mg sodium, 110 calories each. They’re big and crunchy, I love them on their own or with cheese, peanut butter, or tuna pizza! hehe

The mushrooms were in the next aisle over but I they were lonely so I put them in the picture. These are from Italy and taste awesome on pizza. You can’t even tell that there’s no salt added either, love them!

This is a weird combination, I know, but I really liked it; lemon chicken with oven fries and tartar sauce:

I cut up 118g chicken breast (130 cal) and cooked it in 1 teaspoon olive oil (40 cal) in a nonstick pan. When it was almost done I squeezed a little lemon juice (2 cal) and 1/8 teaspoon lemon pepper over it. While the chicken was cooking, I was baking 1.5 servings Alexia “Oven Crinkles” (180 cal) in the oven on 450F and steaming 3oz fresh broccoli (30 cal).

I made the tartar sauce with ¼ cup Fage Total 2% plain yogurt (40 cal) and 1.5 TBSP organic sweet relish (22 cal). For only 444 calories, this was a very tasty AND filling meal. I dipped the chicken, my baked fries, and the broccoli in the yogurt tartar sauce; it was awesome! lol The chicken wasn’t very lemony, but just enough to give it a little flavor. I went very light on the lemon pepper because it does have quite a bit of sodium in it, but a little is all you need. I was going to make a red potato with this, but realized I was out of potatoes at the last minute! :( Oh well, baked fries are yummy too! ;)

My BodyBugg results for 7/29/08:

Went to sleep at 5:00AM
BodyBugg reset at 12:00AM
Woke up at 11:00AM

3:55PM: 1368 calories burned
6:17PM: 1630 calories burned
8:17PM: 2212 calories burned
10:44PM: 2574 calories burned
11:30PM: 2669 calories burned
End of day: 2754 calories burned

Hubby and I did go on a walk after breakfast, but I didn’t wear my HRM. It actually felt good to not have to worry about taking it off and reading the results as soon as we got home lol. And you know what else? I feel sooo much less puffy today! It figures, ya know? I’m going to the doctor and I’ll try to explain how I’m retaining more water than usual, but of course it will all go away right before my appointment LOL. That would be nice, but I doubt that will happen. Feeling less puffy is a plus though. :D

I felt bad whacking bunnies lol

by Jenn (j3nn.net) on July 29, 2008

So, here I am finally getting around to doing yesterday’s update lol.

My AeroGarden is doing great:

I’m so excited about it! I gave it more water and 2 more nutrient tablets today being it’s been 2 weeks. I can’t wait to use the fresh herbs. I think I’m going to get 2 or 3 more of them so I can grow tomatoes and a lettuce bed year-round. It’s exciting to watch them grow!! It seems like one day they had a growth spurt overnight and now they’re shooting up like crazy. :D

We were pretty busy yesterday/today, but we did manage to go on a walk. My heart rate monitor results for the walk:

Summary:

01:12:32
527 cal burned
158 max HR
125 avg

When we came home I made egg salad on mini pita bread:

I don’t know where I came up with the egg salad idea, but it sounded good and it actually was. I made it with:

2 cage free large (hard boiled) eggs (150 cal)
2 TBSP Hellmann’s olive oil mayo (100 cal)
3 Lindsay low sodium black olives, chopped (15 cal)
8g red onions, finely chopped (8 cal)
122g diced vine ripened tomato (22 cal)
1 TBSP organic sweet relish (15 cal)
Black pepper
Salt is optional, I didn’t use it

310 calories, 1 serving (155 calories for 2 split servings)

I toasted 2 Toufayan 100% whole wheat Pitettes (mini pitas, 140 cal) in the toaster on the lowest setting to warm them up a bit. Then I piled on 1 cup (28g) Bibb lettuce (5 cal) over both pitas and added the egg salad on top. With 1oz Snyder’s unsalted mini pretzels (110 cal), this was a yummy post-walk open-faced egg salad mini pita feast for just 565 calories.

Don’t fear eggs! They’re delicious and packed with protein. The incredible, edible egg isn’t just for breakfast anymore. ;)

My husband gave me this idea the other day when I gave him one of my Fage 2% with side cherries to try because I insisted it tasted like cheesecake. So he was like, “Ooh, this would taste good with a graham cracker crumbled over it.” Great idea, hubby!!

I put a half serving (15g) Annie’s cinnamon “Bunny Grahams” (65 cal) on a paper plate, covered it with a piece of plastic wrap, then whacked them with a coffee mug! :o lol Then I put the crushed graham crackers at the bottom of a small bowl and put 1 Fage 2% yogurt with side cherries (140 cal) over the graham “crust” that I made. Hubby was right, it was good! It was better than good, it was AWESOME! A guiltless cheesecake alternative for just 205 calories, 10g protein and no baking required. :D

My BodyBugg results for 7/28/08:

Went to sleep at 5:30AM
BodyBugg reset at 12:00AM
Woke up at 11:00AM

End of day: 2815 calories burned

I haven’t even updated my BodyBugg for my weight gain, so I might have burned more than it estimates. When I gain a few pounds I don’t adjust my heart rate monitor or BodyBugg settings, but when the scale goes down I change it. I figure it doesn’t matter much if I’m burning more than it estimates and weighing less is the only thing that would make a difference if I were relying on it for caloric intake, but like I said, I just use these things as a guideline (more like curiosity), I would never eat down to the very calorie they predict without paying attention to what my body is saying. I might need more or less depending on what the scale and my measurements say. At the same time I haven’t really given either of them 100% test since I got them. I’ve had a lot of stopping and going for the past couple of months. I’ll get around to giving them both a full throttle, lengthy test one of these days! We’ll see what my new doc says first.

So, now it’s almost time for another update lol! I’ll probably do another one late tonight. :)

Thunder booms

July 23, 2008

We were woken up by loud thunder and bright white skies filled with lightening! It’s been raining all day, so a walk to town was completely out of the question. I didn’t especially feel like doing anything today anyway, including eating lol. I guess the weather made me feel sluggish.
