New York Delicatessen in Your Kitchen

by j3nn on April 9, 2011

Too far away from a great delicatessen? Don’t fret, you can easily convert your kitchen into a makeshift one like I did.

My mom picked up some Boar’s Head cuts at the deli counter, along with fresh club rolls—all the right ingredients, a yummy sandwich was inevitable. In love

I drizzled extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar on both sides of the bread, then a layer each of salami, capicola (Italian ham), Swiss cheese, shredded romaine lettuce, and tomato slices, then a generous sprinkle of dried oregano.

Yummmm! I Red heart sandwiches. Especially ones that involve red wine vinegar. It’s adds such a tasty kick.

What’s your favorite deli sandwich? Turkey with lettuce + tomato + mayo on whole wheat is an old favorite, but I also love reubens and corned beef on rye; Italian combos. I think I just like everything on a deli menu, even liverwurst! Surprised smile haha

That was the highlight of my afternoon, LOL. I’m feeling even better today than yesterday. I’m about 96% back  to normal. Just a few leftover coughs and a little stuffiness, but so little that it’s now a nonissue. Open-mouthed smile

The weather is beautiful! It was 75 degrees F in our bedroom when I woke up—without the heat on! Sun If it’s nice out tomorrow, I might go for a walk. But there’s thunderstorms Lightning in the forecast, so that might not happen.

We had our windows open in the office and overheard neighbors arguing outside… LOUDLY. So classy! Eye rolling smile I’m returning the favor now. I have the 80s channel on Sirius playing pretty loudly and I’m singing along, not knowing half of the lyrics, totally off-key. Rolling on the floor laughing I’m thoughtful like that.

I’m going to watch a movie or something saved on Tivo now. Be back with an update tomorrow!

Your hoagie looks delicious! I’ve never thought to use red wine vinegar – I usually go for balsamic. I’ll have to give the red wine a try though. I love sandwiches packed with all kinds of fresh veggies! Except olives :X

I’m a vinegar freak, I love all kinds! I’ve never had balsamic on a sandwich, I’ll have to try that. :)

listening to people argue…i posted about that as one of my random facts earlier in the week and that i hate it! I mean, i am kind of “immune” but when they are doing it in a place you can’t just avoid, i.e. open windows…that blows. Our 1st home in CA. Nearly a 7 figure pricetag…was situated on about 18 inch lot lines. I could be in my backyard with a huge wood fence and my neighbor could be in her kitchen talking on the phone and with windows open could hear EVERY word. Oy vey. Not like the quarter acre lots i grew up with in the midwest!

Just proves that money can’t buy class, right? That sounds awful! We live on about an acre now in an upper class subdivision that are mainly second vacation homes to NYC dwellers (our landlord was one of them until they moved to Texas), but it’s tiny compared to the 5.5 acres I grew up on! haha Close neighbors are still a newish thing to me. I’m looking forward to living on a small farm when we buy a house, LOL.

your sandwich looks so professional!
When I ate meat, I loved anything with salami, and I also loved reubens!

I live in MA and after growing up in New Jersey, I have realized very few in the north know how to make a sandwich.

Before becoming vegetarian, I used to love turkey, ham, white american with lettuce, tomato, mayo and oil and vinegar.

Now I love swiss cheese loaded with veggies – especially avocado!

I’m beginning to think that NY and NJ have the best sandwiches like they have the best real pizza, LOL. When we lived in Atlanta for awhile, I swear the best sandwiches I had were from Jersey Mike’s, and that’s a chain! haha

I love a good sandwich, especially when I take the time to make it something special. The bread on this one looks amazing!

One of my recent favorites is toasted honey wheat bread with turkey, swiss and sliced avocado – YUM!

Boar’s head is the best! I love Boar’s Head honey-smoked turkey breast! I always see honey smoked ham, but I don’t like ham as much as turkey so I LOOOVE this turkey!

Wow those sandwiches seriously are deli material! I love taking sandwiches with me to the beach, so versatile. I love that bread, I think the bread makes the whole sandwich :D

I’m glad you are feeling better!

I love reubens too — but my favorite is pastrami sandwiches.

Oh I love sandwiches, too! My dream is to be able to make sandwich rolls like Subway, but I haven’t managed to get just what I want. Lately my son’s favorite is turkey with thinly sliced apple and swiss cheese.

: )

There is nothing like a good Italian sandwich or a New York Deli! Love it all :) If you are ever in New York, you must go to Katz’s…the best pastrami on rye ever!
