New Hampshire in Numbers

by J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) on January 12, 2012

Distance driven to and from New Hampshire: 586 miles

map

Hours slept before leaving for trip: zero — wide awake at 3:00 am taking bathroom mirror pics

jenn_1_jan10

Time slept in car on way to NH: I estimate 20 minutes total, Dustin says it was more like the 4.5 hour duration of trip. Be right back

Hoodies are very useful for car naps.

States driven through on trip: 4

Ward number assigned to us at Ron Paul Headquarters in Concord: 7

new hampshire ward 7.jpg

Fellow sign-holders in our ward: 1 – According to locals, this was the least amount of candidate-supporters they have ever seen outside of the ward 7 polling station. Apparently there are usually dozens of people, this time a total of 3; two of which were Dustin and me, the other was a nice lady supporting Jon Huntsman.

Average number of degrees during our time on the sidewalk of ward 7: ~36 degrees F not including the wind-chill

Hours spent holding Ron Paul signs and chatting with voters: 6 – We stayed until the polls closed at 7:00 pm. My fingers and toes were about to fall off.

Number of cars passing giving signs of support (honking, waving, thumbs-up, etc.): At least 40 or 50

Number of votes Ron Paul received in ward 7: 138 – coming in third place in a heavily Democratic and socially-conservative district!

Number of votes Ron Paul received in the entire state of New Hampshire: 56,848 – a strong second place finish against opponents with tens of millions of dollars in campaign financing!

Number of candidates we support for President in 2012: 2 – Ron Paul and Gary Johnson

Number of burrito bowls eaten on trip: .33 of one – chicken with guac + all other toppings

chipotle nh.jpg

Chipotle is quite generous with their bowls. So GOOD.

Of course we encountered some peaceful opposition at the polls, but in general everyone was very well-behaved, polite, and friendly. We had several people say they would vote for “our guy” (Ron Paul) but they can’t get past his foreign policy because they believe Iran shouldn’t have a nuclear weapon and that it’s our duty to help Israel. They believe Ron Paul is an isolationist, but that is completely untrue. Ron Paul is a non-interventionist:

Nonintervention or non-interventionism is a foreign policy which holds that political rulers should avoid alliances with other nations, but still retain diplomacy, and avoid all wars not related to direct self-defense

When we give money to other nations, we forcefully take it from poorer people in the US to give to the wealthy leaders in those other countries and they redistribute it as they see fit, only it’s always in the leaders’ favor. It does not help anyone other than the corrupt, greedy leaders which we end up going to war with years later and the fact is that we give seven times more money to Israel’s enemies than to Israel—How does this help?! Ron Paul supports Israel, he just doesn’t support forcefully taking money that we don’t have from Americans to give to unknown destinations around the world. People are still free to help anyone or any cause they choose, but Ron Paul believes that should be private and voluntary, not coerced by government. This is one of the many policies that I agree with Ron Paul on and why he is my choice for President of the United States. Smile

Had no idea you were doing this. I think it’s great that you are so passionate about your support and his platform that you did this! To each her own on what political candidate or various platforms or positions one supports; but the fact that you have passion and are not afraid to get grass roots and in the trenches and show your support is admirable!

Hi Jen :
Good for you to encourage whom you see fit to be USA president.I love your blogs but I just have to disagree with you on this .I don’t think USA supports Israel enemies .It does and have always been the biggest supporter to Israel.I wish one day you visit Palestine and see how many homes being destroyed by Israel solders and how many kids and youngsters being killed brutally in front of their moms when all what they did was defending their families .
Republican politicians never care a bout the middle class like me .All they care about is to keep their wealth growing .
I totally agree with you on voluntary donations .But what makes United states the most Unique nation is its support of poor people.I have the right when I retire to have SS .Medical care I paid for it for years .Republican want to take all this away.
they are the 1% and they are good at manipulating people minds .what is wrong of fair taxes ?if I am making millions a year I should pay the same % of my driver.
Corporations are not people.
these were some of our differences and I am not attacking you .I am just presenting my point of view.Republicans also the ones who drove us to these wars by lying to our faces ,not Democrats .Actually during Clinton period taxes were fair and USA was at highest economical growth.
I support Obama because he cares about the 99%.
thanks for reading and good luck

Hey maha,

First, thank you for sharing your point of view with us. I would like to take the opportunity to share with you my point of view on the specific issues that you too are concerned about.

“.I don’t think USA supports Israel enemies .It does and have always been the biggest supporter to Israel.”

The truth is, while politically we don’t support Israel’s enemies, we do provide them with foreign aid. If there were a natural disaster in any of these countries, the U.S.A offers help whether they are considered an enemy or not. However, our country sends money to these countries and combined the amounts exceed what we send to Israel by no less than six times.

“I wish one day you visit Palestine and see how many homes being destroyed by Israel solders and how many kids and youngsters being killed brutally in front of their moms when all what they did was defending their families.”

If you don’t mind me asking, do you live in Palestine or do you visit often yourself? I only ask because in that case I would love to hear more about your experiences. Many of the people who speak of events such as you described typically describe what they have seen on media outlets like Al Jazeera, while not actually witnessing them personally. These media outlets, much like the ones in the U.S, spin stories out of context to push their own agenda’s.

Another point I would like to add is, the horrifying event you described is not specific to just Palestine. Those events unfold just as often in the United States as they do there. Our soldiers are not even safe at home, some have been murdered in cold blood by SWAT teams in their own homes.

On Palestine’s right to statehood, I don’t believe any other country has any say in whether or not another country can be considered a country. If Palestine wants its sovereignty, it does not have to ask for it, and should not have to ask for it. Sovereignty is not something that can be given or taken away. With that in mind, Israel has the same rights.

The disputed territories of Israel, in my opinion, are rightfully Israel’s. Any acts of aggression has consequences, and those responsible must accept those consequences. Israel claimed that territory during the six day war. While there is debate over who attacked who first, I find it highly suspect that there was even an army to attack just over Israels borders.

“Republican politicians never care a bout the middle class like me. All they care about is to keep their wealth growing.”

I’m afraid you have been lied to. You almost had it correct but you began the statement with a specific political party. The truth is, neither Democrat or Republican politicians care about lower, middle, or upper class. They care about getting re-elected. Obviously, there are some politicians who do in fact care about their constituents, but I can assure you they are not all in one specific party.

“I totally agree with you on voluntary donations. But what makes United states the most Unique nation is its support of poor people. I have the right when I retire to have SS. Medical care I paid for it for years. Republican want to take all this away.”

Actually, what made the Unites States unique was that it was the only country in the world that gave it’s power to the people, and not to the government. The constitution was written to tell the government what it’s rights were. The constitution was not written to tell the people what their rights were. Government does not given people their rights.

Your rights are given to you by yourself. Anything you want to do that you would not need to ask for permission to do, is a right. For example: You have a right to share your lawnmower with a neighbor, but you do not have a right to share your neighbors lawnmower with another neighbor. You have a right to ask your neighbor permission to borrow his lawnmower (and he has a right to say no), but you do not have permission to take his lawnmower without asking, or to ask and get permission, and then let someone else borrow his lawnmower without telling him.

You have a right to social security because you paid for it, but you don’t necessarily have a right for all of what is promised to you. You have a right to what you have contributed.

However, shouldn’t you have a right to opt out of social security if you believe you can manage your retirement funds better than the government? Worse, what if the government is mismanaging social security funds and there is a high risk that you will not even get any of the benefits you are supposed to be entitled to? Why should you have to continue to pay into social security if it may not even exist when you retire?

If you were using a private retirement company, and you noticed the management driving million dollar cars, if you suspected they were also using drugs, and being completely reckless with the companies funds, would you continue to pay your premiums or would you choose another company to manage your retirement funds? Social security was supposed to be in it’s own separate account, but politicians have been using social security funds no differently than any other funds in government, your social security funds are not set aside, some have been used to fight wars, some have been used for financial bailouts.

In all likelihood, you will not collect any social security, but they will force you to contribute until the day it goes belly up.

“Republican want to take all this away. they are the 1% and they are good at manipulating people minds. what is wrong of fair taxes?”

The same goes for democrats. Are you forgetting that Nancy Pelosi is also the 1%? Obama is the 1%, Maxine Waters is the 1%. Hillary Clinton is the 1%. List goes on and on.

Who says today’s tax code is fair? 49% of U.S citizens pay absolutely zero taxes. The top 10% of income earners in the U.S paid 71% of all taxes. The 1% paid 40% of all taxes. How much more are they supposed to pay before it’s fair? These people aren’t using more highway than anyone else, they are certainly not using more government programs than anyone else. What justifies them paying more taxes, what justifies them paying the taxes they are currently paying?

Because they worked hard, took on significant personal risk, to achieve the wealth they enjoy today, they should be forced to give it to government?

“if I am making millions a year I should pay the same % of my driver.”

Totally agree with you on that. $0.00 is more than fair for me, you, and your driver.

Truth is, I hate arguing over who should pay more or less taxes. It’s pointless, there simply shouldn’t be taxes period.

How is it ethical in any way to force someone to give their hard earned money to someone else? Taxes are always taken by force. If you don’t pay, if you can’t pay, doesn’t matter. You will eventually be looking down the barrel of a gun if you don’t pay your taxes. Money taken at gunpoint is theft, doesn’t matter if the gunman has a badge or not. Money demanded with the threat of violence is extortion. Doesn’t matter if the extortioner has a baseball bat or a badge.

“Corporations are not people.”

Corporations can be run by just one individual. Not sure what point you are raising, just pointing out that corporations are run by people. Corporations are normally formed for organizational, contractual, and tax purposes.

“Republicans also the ones who drove us to these wars by lying to our faces ,not Democrats .”

There were 81 house democrats, and 29 senate democrats who voted for using force against Iraq. I wouldn’t pin it on only republicans. Everyone in government was responsible.

“Actually during Clinton period taxes were fair and USA was at highest economical growth.”

Because interest rates were set artificially low by the federal reserve, this encouraged a lot of growth in business, especially internet businesses. We also had the birth of Microsoft, and the beginning of the information age. Clinton was only responsible for appointing Greenspan to the federal reserve and they not only manipulated the tech industry with these rates, they caused the .com bust by hiking the rates later on. Clinton’s administration also went to great lengths to shut Microsoft down. Microsoft alone is responsible for the boom to the tech industry. The ridiculous accusation of anti-trust against Microsoft was that they claimed they were basically claiming they had a monopoly on their own operating system. They were trying to stop them from bundling their web browser and other software with the operating system.

Imagine that? Big bad evil Microsoft was GIVING AWAY TOO MUCH SOFTWARE FOR FREE so other companies complained to the government, and since Microsoft was raking in money, and government definitely doesn’t like that, they came down on them like a ton of bricks.

And people went along with it, all we do is complain about big corporations getting rich by taking money from us and taking advantage of us. One company gives too much stuff away for free, and we complain about that too! Did we really want to be paying $199.95 for a web browser to surf the internet with that bad?

I hope I shed some new light on a few things. I hate seeing people buying into mainstream media propaganda, and while the internet is still free, you should do your own research while you still can. So you can form your own opinions, never let anyone else form your opinions and beliefs for you.

Hi, maha! :) Thanks for commenting, I really appreciate your input. Just wanted to drop a link with a little more information about foreign aid and how it hurts Israel and poor and middle class Americans: http://www.democratsforronpaul.com/2012/01/06/end-aid-to-dependent-dictators/

On the surface, foreign aid seems like it is helpful, but it really does more harm than good–for any country, especially the poor and middle class in America that the money is being taken from. Everyone has the right to decide where their money should go and it just doesn’t make sense to forcefully take from the less fortunate in America to give to the wealthy leaders in other countries who keep their citizens in poverty and oppressed. And when we give foreign aid in the form of food to other countries, it kills the market for farmers who have goods to sell; they cannot sell it if we are giving it away, hence the vicious cycle that keeps people poor in underdeveloped countries.

Thank you again for reading and for commenting! I welcome all respectful conversation, it’s great to have the opportunity to discuss these things. :)

This was an awesome post!!! I’m just a college student and will be voting for the first time this year, but my parents and uncle are fervent supporters of Ron Paul. I think it’s amazing how much effort you guys are putting into this and I wish more Americans were more informed about Ron Paul and his beliefs. I was just watching a Jon Stewart segment the other day on how little the media talks about Ron paul in comparison to the other candidates…
Anyway, awesome write up and comment from Dustin! I will research more too.

What an amazing candidate ,me and my hubby were talking tonight .Ron Paul is a really good candidate but there is just so little hope for him and he will not stand a chance because the lobbies will not make him win .

As an avid reader of your blog, I wish I had known that you were around the corner from my work. I would have come by and said hi :) Interestingly enough, where you live now is also very close to where I grew up (upstate NY). Choosing not to pay for internet at home means I am always behind the times on my blog reading!
